Product of Japan
Variations in cultivation, harvesting, and manufacturing practices can impact the efficacy of red reishi supplements. Japanese production of red reishi is meticulous and costly, following strict guidelines set by the Japan Reishi Association (JRA). Unfortunately, many companies do not adhere to the same guidelines and many use low-cost production methods in their growing techniques. These methods lead to ineffective products with few, if any, benefits to the consumer. Red reishi plants with the highest concentrations of beneficial nutrients (and those used in Mikei Red Reishi) are grown through the natural wood-log cultivation method.

Common (low-cost) Production Methods

Wood Box Cultivation Method:

Reishi are grown from 3 to 5 months in a wooden container. The mushrooms are grown until they are midsized without any soil, resulting in low nutrient content.

Wood Pulp/Paper Cultivation Method:

Reishi plants are grown in glass or plastic containers for up to 3 months. No soil is used, resulting in very low nutritional content.

After the plants are grown, many companies simply grind up the dried reishi mushrooms and put them into capsules. Supplements made up of pulverized reishi powder are very difficult for the body to absorb and do not provide the kind of results that come from reishi extract.

Natural Wood-Log Cultivation

This method was first developed by the Mayuzumi family of Japan, and is the most complex form of reishi cultivation. A multi-step process, the natural wood-log cultivation method takes almost a year to produce mature, potent plants.

The Method

  1. The high quality, Mayuzumi strains of red reishi are cultured for two months in carefully controlled conditions.
  2. The cultured fungi are then grafted onto selected high-grade logs and placed in cultivation houses to grow for four months.
  3. The treated logs are then placed in a greenhouse and buried under nutrient-rich soil for five months.
  4. It takes five months for the red reishi to absorb as many nutrients from the soil as they can. The soil is only used for five years; afterwards, it is left to recover nutrients for two to three years.
  5. The reishi crops in the greenhouse are strictly monitored for temperature, humidity, nutrients, carbon dioxide, and light intensity.
  6. The crops are sprayed daily with sanitized water to prevent bacterial infection.
  7. Soil nutrients are closely monitored to eliminate any natural metals, inert toxins, heavy metals, pollutants, or other contaminants.
  8. After five months have passed, the red reishi are left to mature for another month.
  9. When the plants produce a thick layer of spores, spraying is stopped.
  10. Red reishi plants are matured for another 2 weeks after the spores are released and then harvested.
Did you know?

  • Red reishi is naturally covered by a hard indigestible substance called chitin, so absorption of the essential nutrients is only possible when taken in an extract form.

Unextracted reishi powder has few results compared to authentic red reishi extract. Unprocessed, ground-up mushroom particles in the reishi are different from its medically active ingredients; the particles do not contribute any benefits and can actually cause an allergic reaction in some people.

Did you know?

  • Only the fruiting body of fully mature red reishi contains all of the phytonutrients such as ganoderic acids, beta-glucans, and amino acids that make it effective.

Mycelium and spore-based reishi products do not contain all of the chemical constituents that are found in red reishi. In the history of Traditional Chinese Medicine, only the fruiting bodies of mature red reishi are selected for extraction. Spores and mycelium were discarded.

Properly extracted red reishi contains the highest levels of medicinal substances in the most bio-available form. With Mikei Red Reishi, the high quality extraction technique is just as important as the stringent growing conditions.

Mikei Red Reishi Extraction Technique
  1. After harvesting, the fruiting body of red reishi mushrooms are cut into small pieces and boiled for several hours.
  2. The boiling process is repeated three times to completely extract the red reishi essence.
  3. The medicinal extract is transformed from a liquid to a solid using a low temperature vacuum condenser and an air-spray dryer.
  4. The powder is then placed into certified vegetarian capsules and packaged.
