Adaptogens, Benefits & Dynamics
What are Adaptogens?
Adaptogens are healing herbs that can increase the body’s ability to handle external stressors and restore it to normal physiological functions. Red reishi receives the distinction of being classified as the royalty of adaptogenic herbs.
Benefits of Red Reishi
Red reishi (Ganoderma lucidum, also known as lingzhi) is revered for its beneficial healing powers. As one of nature’s most powerful adaptogens, reishi helps support the immune system, reduce the effects of stress, and balance energy levels.
Known as the herb of longevity, reishi has traditionally been used to strengthen the body, boost energy (Qi), and support healthy blood. In traditional practice, it is believed to address heart and spleen deficiencies, which may present as insomnia, forgetfulness, fatigue, or listlessness. Reishi is also a natural source of antioxidants.
Mushroom Dynamics
As one of the most researched medicinal mushrooms, reishi deserves a closer look at its unique structure and benefits. At its core, reishi consists of two main parts: the mycelium and the fruiting body (stem and cap).
Mycellium
The mycelium is a cobweb-like network that grows underground. It functions much like roots, spreading widely, absorbing nutrients, and interacting with the surrounding environment. Through this network, the mycelium supplies the fruiting body with the nutrients it needs to grow.
Fruiting Body
The fruiting body is the above-ground portion of the mushroom—what most people recognize as the mushroom itself. It consists of a stem, cap, and spore-bearing surface.
Products derived from reishi’s fruiting body, when properly extracted, contain the highest concentration of bioactive compounds. Research shows that mycelium- or spore-based products lack many of the key chemical constituents found in red reishi. Historically, in herbal medicine, the mycelium and spores were discarded in favor of the fruiting body for extraction.
Fungi Fact #1
Red reishi is naturally protected by chitin—a tough, indigestible substance. This means its key nutrients can only be absorbed when reishi is taken in an extract form.
Fungi Fact #2
Only the fruiting body of fully mature red reishi contains the full spectrum of beneficial compounds—including ganoderic acids, beta-glucans, and amino acids—that contribute to its effectiveness.
